Costumes are defined by the dictionary as 'A set of clothes in a style typical of a particular country or historical period'.  Wikipedia refers to them as 'a particular style of clothing worn to portray the wearer as a character or type of character other than their regular persona at a social event such as a masquerade, a fancy dress party or in an artistic theatrical performance'. But to me costumes are a carefree and fun way to pretend to be someone or something that you wouldn't normally be. They are a way of changing your appearance to become a completely different character or persona.
