Mermaid Costumes – Mythical Seductive Creatures of the Sea

Mermaid Costumes

In mythology, the beautiful mermaid was a half woman, half fish creature who lived under the sea. Depending on which version of the story you choose, the beautiful mermaid frolics with her sea creatures, saves drowning boys who fall from boats or sings to men who are drowning so that they go calmly to their watery deaths. They are mysterious, potentially dangerous and if truth be told, just a little wicked. All of this works toward making the mermaid a sexy costume option, no matter what your age group. For children, the option is pretty simple: they will wear the flame haired Ariel costume, one of the best of Disney’s creations. For woman, the choice and style of mermaid costumes are entirely up for debate and you can make your mermaid costume as sexy or as sedate as you would like.

Start with the Tail

The best mermaid costume starts with the tail. For the really high grade look, the little slit that allows your feet to poke free is virtually impossible to detect. (Make sure that you are wearing the right colored hose and shoes to complete the illusion.) Remember, the mermaid costume is not one that is going to afford you a lot of mobility, so skip it if you plan to enter any dancing contests, or if you are going to be doing a lot of walking. You also should not attempt to drive after you have been dressed.

The tail material should be shimmery and metallic looking, materials which work really well. The object is to have a tail that looks as much like fish scales as possible but is still sexy. The brighter the material, the more light it will catch and reflect.

And Then Add the Top

In addition to the great tail, your mermaid costume will need a top. For most costumes, this means a seashell bra. If you are a little more modest or seashells will not suffice, there are other options to consider. For those who do not want to bare it all as a mermaid opt for a costume that has a flesh colored insert in the middle to cover your tummy, but still give you the illusion of the sexy mermaid. If you need more coverage than a seashell bra top would give, then opt for a more supportive, more modest top.  For instance, I once wore a sexy sports bra style top that I added little shells and other sea inspired touches too. Its color matched my fishy tail perfectly and no one knew that I had to make a last minute substitution.

Hair and Makeup

Your hair should be long and flowing so if you don’t have it, fake it with a great wig. Remember, mermaids spend much of their time sunning on a rock, brushing their long, beautiful hair as they sing. Make your makeup as aquatic themed as possible, but avoid tacky dark blue eyes shadow. You are a mermaid, not a ‘70’s disco-maid.
