Fairy costumes are popular with women, young and old. Little girls like them for their wings, playful clothes, and the arbitrary wand. Adult women may choose adult fairy costumes not just for the frivolity of it all, but maybe also for the attention it can grab.
A short description of an adult fairy costume would be just that: it is short. Although there are such costumes with longer, fuller skirts and sleeves, many are skimpy and rather revealing. This is in line with the idea of what a fairy is: carefree and mischievous. Fairy costumes say “I like having fun, but you cannot take me seriously”. For the most part, these costumes whether for children or for adults have wings of some description. They can be large, awkward, but beautiful. They can be small, practical, but still noticeable. It depends on the costume maker and the wearer’s preferences.
Fairy costume headgear can vary. There are coronets, tiaras, wreaths made of branches, flowers in the hair, or none at all. Again, it is up to the wearer and costumer where they want to go with the costume. The costume tells the story, so it can change. A fairy of the forest would have something in green or brown with leaf and wood motifs. A fairy costume depicting a resident of a magical city might have a long, pouffy gown; stockings, boots, sandals, or barefoot are the way to go with fairy-style leg and footwear.
The fun part of deciding on wearing fairy costumes is that you can always choose which fairy works best for your personality. You can either be an Angel of light or an Angel of death. How about choosing between a gothic fairy and a graveyard fairy? If you are dressing for Halloween, you can also scare and at the same time enchant people by being a vampire fairy. For Christmas, you can dress up as a fairy giving gifts or granting wishes. Then again, you can be Cinderella’s fairy godmother; or how about asking two of your friends to be Sleeping Beauty’s three fairies with you?
A fairy costume cannot go very far without the wearer acting the part. Their disposition is another point of contention. Some say they are kind and grant wishes or give guidance to the righteous. Other descriptions portray them as mischievous tricksters who like to play pranks on humans. Fortunately, because fairies have different descriptions of their temperaments, any behavior can be justified as fairy-like. You can be the shy fairy, flitting away from those who pay too close attention. You can be the mischievous fairy, who tells ribald jokes. You can be the noble type, with regal bearing and “granting” wishes to those you deem worthy.
You have to understand the character you choose or if you want more flexibility, you can always come up with your own ideas of a fairy character. If you love fairy tales however, a great idea will be to arrive in a party wearing your fairy costume and start saying a famous fairy speech. There are a lot of other fun things you can come up with. In the end, the fairy is you, so wear your fairy fancy dress costume, play the character and have fun.
